Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is on the target of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) these days. The BJP is demanding an apology from him for his statement on India’s democracy in London. Rahul spoke in detail on this whole controversy in the meeting of the Consultative Committee on India’s G-20 Chairmanship under the chairmanship of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Sources said Rahul Gandhi clarified his remarks made during his visit to London. He said that he did not ask any other country to interfere in this matter.
The former Congress national president said he only raised questions about India’s democracy and told the leaders present there that he believed it was an internal matter and they would sort it out. The Congress MP said that I did not speak in the manner in which the BJP is claiming.
Rahul Gandhi did not make any comment during the opening session of the meeting. Although later he expressed his views on various subjects. Rahul Gandhi’s comments were opposed by BJP MPs saying that this is not the appropriate forum to speak on the subject. During this, a heated debate also took place between the Congress MPs and the BJP MPs.
The chairman of the committee, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, interrupted Rahul Gandhi and said that he should speak only on today’s topic.
BJP MPs said that while the discussion was going on, many people were trying to divert attention from the issue of India getting the G-20 chairmanship. Raising questions on the Congress, the BJP said that the Emergency was the biggest blot on India’s democracy.
Rahul Gandhi finally said that some MPs spoke out of context and he would reply to all. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar interrupted him and said that the subject of the meeting should be discussed and not just political matters. The External Affairs Minister also told him that he can say whatever he wants to say in Parliament.
The meeting of the Consultative Committee was attended by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi. BJP MPs who attended the meeting included GVL Narasimha Rao, DT Rajdeep Roy, Mahesh Jethmalani and Anil Ferozia. Senior officials of the Ministry of External Affairs were also present in the meeting.
