Cruise service has started from Chennai to Hambantota in Sri Lanka. The initiative for this was going on between the Government of India and Sri Lanka for a long time, which has now been given a concrete shape. Let us tell you that the first cruise carrying Indian tourists from Chennai reached Sri Lanka’s southern port city of Hambantota on Wednesday. The local agent for Advantis and Cordelia Cruises said the “MS Empress” arrived with 1,600 passengers and 600 crew members. Local media previously reported that Advantis – the transport and logistics arm of Hellas Group – and Cordelia Cruz would act as general sales agent as part of a partnership between Advantis – Travel & Aviation, while Advantis Group’s subsidiary The company Clarion Shipping will act as the port agent in Sri Lanka for Cordelia Cruises.
Thousands of tourists can travel in the next four months
After the commencement of cruise service between India and Sri Lanka, the number of passengers is expected to increase continuously. Around 80,000 tourists – mostly Indians – are expected to use the Chennai-Hambantota-Trincomalee-Chennai service every week during the next four months. The launch of the cruise service comes in the backdrop of an MoU signed between Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism for domestic and international cruise service at the Incredible India International Cruise Convention in 2022.
