The flagging off ceremony of the Goa-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express at Madgaon station has been canceled in view of the tragic train accident in Odisha. Konkan Railway officials gave this information on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to flag off the Goa-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express via video conference on Saturday morning, while Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav was to be present at Madgaon station for the ceremony. Officials said the railway minister will now visit the accident site in Odisha and the function has been cancelled.

PM Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the train accident in Odisha. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. “He said,” Spoke to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway at the accident site and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected people.
Announcement of ex-gratia for the relatives of the deceased
The Prime Minister’s Office said, “The families of each of the deceased who lost their lives in the train accident in Odisha will be given an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PMNRF. Rs 50,000 each will be given to the injured.” The Railway Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh each to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 each to the minorly injured.
The number of people who lost their lives in the accident was 233.
Significantly, in the train accident in Balasore, Odisha, the death toll has increased to 233, while more than 900 people have been injured. The condition of many of the injured remains critical. It is being told that the death toll may increase further. The work of relief and rescue teams is still going on at the spot.
