As hot as this year’s summer is, air travel is also proving to be equally hot during these summer holidays. After the closure of the country’s leading airlines company Go First Crisis, there has been a tremendous increase in the price of air tickets in the country in the last one month. Air fares are sky high in May and June. But now there seems to be relief in it. According to the latest survey, a reduction in fares has been registered on the 10 busiest air routes of the country.
Sky fare due to Go First
The summer holiday season is the busiest time of the year for rail and air travel. But this year the situation was different. Airlines were already under pressure on air fares due to rising ATF prices, while the GoFirst crisis suddenly created a shortage of aircraft in the country in the month of May. To bridge this huge gap between demand and supply, companies are constantly increasing fares. Air fares have increased by two to three times on many busy routes like Delhi Mumbai. In this background, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had asked the airlines on June 6 to keep the price of air tickets at a reasonable level.
Reduction in fares of these 10 air routes
The overall average airfares on 10 domestic routes including Delhi-Srinagar have come down and the trend is likely to continue in the coming weeks as well, according to data compiled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). An analysis of airfares on a week-by-week basis for the period up to July 13 shows a decline in average airfares on some routes. There are 10 air routes that have seen a drop in fares. Delhi-Srinagar, Srinagar-Delhi, Delhi-Leh, Leh-Delhi, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Pune, Pune-Delhi, Ahmedabad-Delhi and Delhi-Ahmedabad.
Mumbai-Delhi fare still high
Ministry sources said the overall average airfares on these routes, except the Mumbai-Delhi route, declined. GoFirst flights have been closed since May 3. A jump in airfares has been observed on the routes operated by GoFirst in the last month. During a meeting chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on June 5, representatives of airline companies were asked to self-regulate fares. Air fares in India are not subject to regulation.
