The government said on Thursday that for the first time in the country, lithium reserves have been detected in Jammu and Kashmir.

Estimates of about 6 million tonnes of lithium

According to the Ministry of Mines, the Geological Survey of India has for the first time discovered lithium inferred resource (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes in Salal-Haimana area of ​​Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Mines Secretary Vivek Bhardwaj said, “Lithium deposits have been discovered for the first time and that too in Jammu and Kashmir.” On exploration by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), lithium deposits have been found in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

India is dependent on other countries for lithium
Actually Lithium is such a ‘non-ferrous’ metal which is one of the important components in any battery. Earlier, the Mines Ministry had said that the government is taking several proactive measures to secure minerals including lithium from Australia and Argentina to strengthen the critical mineral supply chain for emerging technologies. Currently, India is dependent on imports for several minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt.

Lithium needed from phone to solar panel
In the 62nd meeting of the Central Geological Programming Board, Mines Secretary Vivek Bhardwaj said that vital minerals are needed everywhere, be it mobile phones or solar panels. He said that in order to become self-reliant, it is very important for the country to find and process important minerals. He also said that if the import of gold is reduced, “we will become self-sufficient.”
