Delhi: The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) on Friday said it has withdrawn its appeal to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’ following a government directive. Just a day before withdrawing the appeal, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala had said that it would be good if people respond positively to the board’s call to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’.

February 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day across the world. “As per the direction of the competent authority and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the Animal Welfare Board of India to observe ‘Cow Hug Day’ on February 14, 2023,” Board Secretary SK Dutta said in a notice posted on the website. The appeal issued by the Board has been withdrawn.”

Appeal to cow lovers to celebrate ‘Cow Hug Day’

This was the first time that AWBI had appealed to the cow lovers in the country to observe ‘Cow Hug Day’. Earlier, the board had said that the appeal was made because the Vedic traditions were almost on the verge of extinction due to the advancement of western culture. Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Purushottam Rupala on Thursday said it would be good if people respond positively to the AWBI’s call to observe February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’.

‘Not much should be read into date selection’

Rupala had said that not much should be read into the selection of the date of February 14 for the purpose. The minister had told reporters, “There is an age-old tradition of worshiping the cow in this country and it would be a matter of great happiness if people hug the cow. Since February 14 is the day of love, it is good if people hug the cow on that day.” Remember and love him. And if someone taunts on this, don’t get angry, but have mercy.

He said that the Board, established in the year 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, provides grants to animal welfare organizations and advises the Center on animal welfare issues.
