The death toll in Turkey and Syria has surpassed the death toll from the 2011 earthquake in Fukushima, Japan. That earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed more than 18,400 people. Nepal was also hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015, killing over 8,800 people.
