Chinese balloon in US airspace
Washington: The Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Ministry of Defense, claimed here on Wednesday that this was not the first case, before which four such cases had come to light amid the uproar caused by Chinese balloons in US airspace. The Pentagon clarified that the Chinese balloon was part of a larger Chinese surveillance program going on for “many years”. The Pentagon’s statement came at a time when the US military had recently destroyed a Chinese surveillance balloon hovering over sensitive US installations. The balloon was destroyed by a fighter plane on Saturday over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that China has violated the sovereignty of not only America, but many countries across five continents. Meanwhile, Defense Department spokesman Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters that the US Northern Command was trying to recover the wreckage of the destroyed balloon. Responding to a question, he said that the US is aware that earlier also four balloons were flown over American territory.
‘We are investigating this incident as part of the larger Chinese surveillance balloon programme,’ Ryder said. He said that this program is being run for many years. He did not say where China sent the balloons, but said the US learned a lot about the program last week.
“The United States is not the only target of this massive surveillance program that violates the sovereignty of many countries on five continents,” Blinken said at a joint press conference with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. Media reports in the US state that China has operated a fleet of spy balloons targeting several countries, including India and Japan. American officials have informed their friends and allies, including India, about the Chinese balloon information.
