New Delhi: The Central Government has provided the figures of those who renounced Indian citizenship in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. According to these statistics, since 2011, more than 16 lakh Indians have given up their Indian citizenship. Of these, maximum 2,25,620 Indians are those who have given up Indian citizenship last year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar gave this information in a written reply to a question.
So many people left the country from 2015 to 2019
Giving details of the year-wise number of Indians who renounced Indian citizenship, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that in 2015, 1,31,489 people renounced their citizenship while in 2016, 1,41,603 people renounced their citizenship and in 2017, 1,33,049 people renounced their citizenship. According to him, this number was 1,34,561 in 2018, while 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,256 in 2020 and 1,63,370 Indians in 2021 had given up their citizenship.
Since 2011, more than 16 lakh people have settled abroad
According to the Foreign Minister, in 2022 this number was 2,25,620. Jaishankar said the 2011 figure for reference was 1,22,819, while it was 1,20,923 in 2012, 1,31,405 in 2013 and 1,29,328 in 2014. The total number of Indians who have given up Indian citizenship since the year 2011 is 16,63,440. He said that as per information, during the last three years, five Indian nationals have obtained UAE citizenship. Jaishankar also provided a list of 135 countries whose citizenship has been acquired by Indians.
What did you say about layoffs in foreign companies?
Responding to another question, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the government is aware of the issue of layoffs of professionals by American companies in recent months. A certain percentage of these are likely to be Indian nationals holding H-1B and L1 visas, he added. He said the Government of India has consistently taken up with the US government issues relating to high skilled workers, including IT professionals. “The government is also working with various stakeholders including industry associations and trade chambers on these issues,” Muraleedharan said.
