Congress MP Rajni Patil suspended for budget session
New Delhi: Congress member Rajni Patil was on Friday suspended from the rest of the sittings of the current session of the Rajya Sabha for video recording the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha and posting it on social media. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced this in the Upper House. He said that Patil recorded the video of yesterday’s proceedings of the House and posted it on Twitter. He said that this is a very serious matter. He announced this after listening to several members of various parties including Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal on this issue.
The Speaker suspended the outstanding budget for the session
The Chairman announced the suspension of Patil for the rest of the budget session, pending the report of the Committee of Parliamentary Privileges on the issue. After this announcement by the Speaker, the Congress members staged a walkout from the House. The Congress leader was suspended after he tweeted a video from inside the House, where opposition MPs can be seen protesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the motion of thanks on Thursday, according to reports.
Committee of Privileges will investigate the matter
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar took the matter “seriously” and termed it as an “undesirable activity” on his part. He said that a video related to the proceedings of the House was circulated on Twitter yesterday (Thursday). Rajni Ashokrao Patil was involved in this activity and what has been observed is a matter which we should pay attention to. Jagdeep Dhankhar said that Parliament is the final authority to make rules and no other outside agency will be involved in the probe. The Committee of Privileges will investigate the matter.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar further said, the entire matter will be probed by the Committee of Privileges and till we get the benefit of the Committee’s recommendation for the consideration of this prestigious House, Patil stands suspended for the current session Is.
