Supreme Court dismisses Hindu Sena’s petition
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday declined to entertain a PIL filed by the Hindu Sena seeking a ban on the BBC from airing the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ on the 2002 Gujarat riots. A bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna said that the court cannot impose censorship, the petition is wrong. The bench comprising Justice M.M. The court said – the writ is completely wrong
The counsel urged the bench to hear the petitioner. “What is this (petition)?” the bench said. The counsel insisted that the matter be taken up for hearing. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court, acting on pleas by N. Ram and others, had asked the Center to produce the original records relating to its decision to block a BBC documentary on PM Modi. Dismissing the petition, the apex court said, “We should not waste any more time, the writ is completely misconceived.” There is no merit in this.

Advocate Anand urged the bench to examine the background in which India has emerged as an economic power and a person of Indian origin has become the Prime Minister of Britain. However, the Supreme Court asked how she could argue all this in support of her plea to ban BBC. The Center has banned the documentary on social media and online channels, though it has been screened in various colleges and universities across the country.
BBC told mouthpiece in the petition
The petition, filed by Hindu Sena President Vishnu Gupta and others, states that the petitioner had given a representation to the Center in January to ban the network, but no action has been taken till date. The petition states that BBC is the mouthpiece of those who target it to tarnish India’s image.
