Mcleodganj: The security dog ​​guarding Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama was sold for 1,550 rupees ($20). Duka the Sniffer Labrador Dog guarded the Dalai Lama for almost 12 years. His bid was made after he retired. Police used Duka to sniff out possible bomb threats at the Dalai Lama’s residence.

Duka had lost the power of hearing

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nitin Chauhan, who was posted with the Dalai Lama’s security, told the media that Duka was specially trained to warn the police about explosives. He used to do recce of the venue before the Dalai Lama’s public appearances. Officials engaged in the security of the Dalai Lama told that Duka was the Dalai Lama’s most trusted dog. But he had lost the power of hearing.

Tommy deployed in Dalai Lama’s security

Now the responsibility of protecting the Dalai Lama has been given to nine-month-old Tommy. Tommy was trained by the Punjab Home Guards Canine Training and Breeding Institute and was bought for Rs 3 lakh. Duka was bought in 2010 at the age of seven months from the Army Training Center for Rs 1.23 lakh, said a police officer. After his initial training, he was placed under the protection of the Dalai Lama. He was serving as a soldier.

Dalai Lama lives in McLeodganj

The Dalai Lama lives in the Dharamsala suburb of Mcleodganj, an area with a large Tibetan population and the headquarters of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). The Dalai Lama is one of the highly protected figures in India having three-tier security.
